E-Tec Help Please

I have a 2007 75hp E-Tec. When I start the engine and run about five minutes the no oil warning light comes on and the rpms drop to 1500. I can cut the engine off and start it again and after about five times of doing this the warning will go off and stay off the remainder of the day, and the engine runs normal. I have been using Pennzoil Premium Plus oil lately. Is it possible that this could be a problem? Does the Evinrude oil have any advantage over this that maybe the computer senses? Any type of help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: E-Tec Help Please

Well for one thing you saved a few bucks on oil and just voided your 3 year warranty on a very expensive engine.
It is designed for Evinrude oil and it is a synthetic blend or straight synthetic if the oil injection is adjusted.
I suspect the computer knows something and has put it in limp home mode.
Did you read your manual. It is very clear on what oil to use. Very clear.
An oil sample will tell Evinrude you didn't pay attention.
They have a super 3 year full coverage warranty.
I just can't understand why someone would jeopardize that for a few bucks on an engine that uses very little oil.
Again this is explained in that book that came with your engine. It is a 2 stroke but unlike any other 2 stroke it does not mix oil in the gas. It injects it in a very small amount to each point in the engine that needs lube. Thus the weight and type of oil.
Shame on you for not paying attention to that book.
You may change oil but the computer will sill retain what it knows.

Re: E-Tec Help Please

As Doug said, since the no oil light is on, the computer believes the engine has no oil and is limiting the RPM to protect the engine. The engine may be getting normal oil, but the computer does not know that.

You may have a bad oil level sensor or loose wire, etc. Whether the warrenty is void are not, I do not know. You need to take it back to the dealer and see what they find out.

Hope it is just a bad sensor.

Penzoil Premium Plus is a synthetic blend and if the engine is set to run that then everything is ok, just need to get the dealer check the ECMM for faults. They will show and that has been discussed before on some forums.
You didn't say where you are at. In extreme cold weather, you do need to use 100% synthetic.

Hope I am wrong about the warranty.
I have a 90 Etec which is the same engine. They are most specific about the oil and unlike other engines I have, leave no leeway for a different oil.
It is their very expensive oil they insist on.

All E-TEC engines come from the factory set up for TC-W3 certified oil, just like almost every other new outboard made (2 stroke). They can use any brand of quality TC-W3 oil on the market.

There is an optional "reduced oil" setting for the E-TEC's that your dealer can set with his laptop, that requires the use of Evinrude's XD-100 synthetic oil. At this setting, XD-100 is the ONLY oil you can use.

Unless you have the motor adjusted for the XD-100 oil setting, you can use a regular TC-W3 oil in it without any warranty problems.

You should have spent the extra few bucks and got the genuine BRP oil.

Looks like I will be having a big helping of crow. Burrrp.
I could have swore my manual had something more than the TCW3 like another letter or number.
Looks like not thus the crow.
Sorry for the post.

Re: E-Tec Help Please

we all have our moments.
I'm an Etec fan and didn't know it could use any TCW3 rated oil ,apparently without adjusting for each, and had a special setting using BRP 100% synthetic.
This is about the only Etec problem I've seen here 3 or 4 times now.

Re: E-Tec Help Please

Many manufacturers have been sucessfully sued over their voiding warranties from the use of 'aftermarket' parts, such as oils, and filters.

The aftermarket manufacturers are very diligent in improving and testing their products to ensure they meet or exceed OEM parts. Period.

OEM products are obviously recommended by the dealer, that is their bread and butter, necessary to the survival of their business.

OEM can set some very high standards but the aftermarket will always meet and exceed those standards with a more cost effective product.
