i apologize if this has come up before but I can't seem to locate it on search. I am in the market for a used CC and as I want to try to find one in my price range with a four stroke, which has been difficult , I came across a nice boat with a 2006 E-Tec 150HP. I have only owned one outboard and it was a Johnson Bombadier and I wasn't overly happy with it hence my affinity for a four stroke. How is the overall reliability of this E-Tec ? Thank you

imho...

going into year 13 with my 75hp 2005 no issues excellent warranty ( had code 38 NO OIL issues but BRP took care of me fine into year 8 of ownership.... way past the initial warranty (year 8 delay was my doing not BRP's)

- Fantastic engine
- Cheap on gas
- starts on a dime
- powerful...( my 75 is apparently = 83h/85 HP)

now that said...

get the engine fully checked / serviced by a qualified ETEC man BEFORE you buy (impeller, gearcase etc...)
confirm oil setting (XD-100 or not) XD100 uses only XD100 oil NOTHING ELSE
Make sure all updates are done
Check VST filter !!!
Get the service book and if you can the software if you are a computer person
Dump and check the history log for alarms faults whatever check EMM and Engine run times ex;High temps Injector failures etc...

visit the ETEC user board for additional advice/comments from ETEC folks on your log dump results

Fantastic engine but they need TLC ...like most modern high tech stuff

If you can not do the work yourself an annual visit to the $100 + / hr shop may be needed.-----Repair costs on new " high technology " motors are hard on the small wallet.----They are easier on the fuel budget

Thank you very much.
I am not being sarcastic but how do I take the boat/engine to a certified E-Tec dealer prior to purchase. I don't think I could pay one to make a service call . Maybe I could!

got a trailer ?? can you rent one ??

negotiate the full inspection with the seller and if he refuses...drop him and the boat

pay now or pay later they say. If you buy it blind your buying a jack in the box.

At the very least id ask the seller for a recent comp printout of the heath of the motor.I have a 2011 60hp etec and its been fantastic and somewhere around here I have the last printout from my checkup.Goes down to seconds for operation parameters.Zero issues, zero codes .Ive recently had mine changed to the xd100 setting and its been running fantastic and I'm wondering when it will use oil, lol.People seem to think 4 strokes are perfect. The dealership repair sections prove that wrong, they are mechanical objects and can and will fail too.Personally they will bury me with my motor I hope.I do recommend what crosbyman suggested as the most prudent way to go about it though. If the seller is confident it shouldn't be an issue.

You are in the Johnson/Evinrude forum. Check through this forum and you will find very few issues with E-tecs.

Same can be said for a merc forum, yamaha etc.If you dig a little theres a I love etec thread on there also.I don't understand why around here Yamaha and suzzy are not popular atall.Etec was not doing very well either but lately they have been selling more and more.

Thanks to everyone for all their input. I will continue searching here and I joined E-Nation Forum and I will search there too. I must admit I rather purchase my next boat with a four stroke but if I fall in love with this boat I will be looking at on Saturday and it's a great deal than I would purchase an E-Tec if I found that they are reliable. It's seems like every manufacturer has there problem design and year or years. To anyone's knowledge does anything stand out with E-Tec like a particular HP or year. Thank you again

Why when the guys tell you this "If you can not do the work yourself an annual visit to the $100 + / hr shop may be needed.-----Repair costs on new " high technology " motors are hard on the small wallet"

You don't say anything

But at the same time you say

"I am not being sarcastic but how do I take the boat/engine to a certified E-Tec dealer prior to purchase. I don't think I could pay one to make a service call"

If you cant do the servicing your self nor able to afford the servicing to be done by the tech
Are you sure you are looking at the right engine for you budget ?????
I mean your not going to service nor get any tech to do the job. This engine will be dead within 12 months

If you go down to the southern coast(Destin,Pensacola,Mobile areas) you have to look to find a E-tec motor....lots of Zukis,Yammys and Mercs....must be a reason.

Spybot, let me clarify things. I never said that I can't afford servicing by a tech . I am in the process at looking at boats for a possible purchase. I came from New York down to Florida to look at this boat. I am just not sure many sellers are letting a potential buyer drive off with their boat on a trailer somewhere to get a certified e-etc mechanic to look at it or drive off anywhere for that matter. All risk goes to the seller, what if I get into an accident while I am trailering his boat and there is damage to the boat. I am questioning or should I say rather asking , what is the process in this situation. Hence me stating I am not trying to be sarcastic, I just don't know. I am not close to my house where I can have my boat mechanic come take a look.

BTW, do me a favor if you are going to provide no constructive input to my post , just ignore it and move in.

Thanks again to to everyone else's replies much appreciated.

I joined that Forum too :). Don't be to depressed reading about all the problems people are having with their Evinrude motors. It's just as bad with Mercury and Yamaha boat motors too :(

I was going on the words that were in front of me. No where did you say you had travelled from New York.
If you had stated this at the start, perhaps you would have been given advice that counted.
If you said i have travelled to find a boat, what is the procedure to have it checked over. I am sure you would have had a lot of reply's
Hope you find what your looking for. I am sure you will have a good selection of motors
