I have a 1999 Whaler Outrage with twin 150 Merc two strokes and am thinking about re-powering with 175 E Tec's. I was hoping someone would have advice on this choose of power and any suggestions. Thanks

Thank you for your advice. I can afford it, do yo know if they have fly by wire controls by any chance? (i was led to believe the had no maintenance for 3 years?)

No question that the E-TECs are better outboards. Quieter, cleaner and more efficient.

Which Outrage do you have?? 350HP is an awful lot of HP, even compared to 300HP. Be sure not to overpower your boat. Whalers can take a lot of abuse, but abuse is not mandatory.

I question the statement above that the weight is about the same. Please confirm that. I suspect that a 175 E-TEC is a lot heavier than a carbed 150 Merc, but you didn't say if your Mercs are carbed or Optis.

A 99 150 is 398# the short shaft Etec 175 is 418,Long shaft 25" is 433.
Certainly not lighter weight but at 418 you could call it the same.
Definately no maintenance for 3 years or 300 hours, fewer parts, fewer less complicated service intervals,No breakin period, automatically fogs itself for storage.
ICON control system is described as an electronic system and can be adapted to 150 and up
motors from 2008.I think standard on 250 - 300 in 2010.

You could have a look at this site. Bunch of Whalers nuts there (they swear by the e-tech...). Lots of infos, particulary on the Reference section. You could also browse the Discussion (forum) section.

Thanks everyone, you have all been a great help. I think I an going to go with the 150's and the Icon controls. From your posts and the Whaler forum I think that will be plenty of power. Once again thanks to all. The Miami boat show is coming up and I'm in Miami, think I'll go and see if I can get a deal.
