I don't know what e-glass is but unless it is something special, fiberglass is fiberglass is fiberglass, i don't think there is one for epoxy and one for poly. I'm redoing one of my boats too, all the fiberglass people told me the boat is built with polyester and that's the best to repair with, if you ever use epoxy you can't go back to poly.

Fiberglass mats are specialized for polyester and epoxy resins. Epoxy will not saturate poly mat. Cloths are compatable with either type resin.

It is my understanding that matt that is designated for use with polyester has a binder in it that makes it incompatable with epoxy. On the other hand matt that is designated for use with epoxy does not have that binder and so can be used with epoxy and with polyester. The difference is that without the binder the matt tends to fluff apart somewhat.

At least that is what I've been told about the stuff. Might be right, might be wrong, 50/50 chance.

Thom

E glass is the most widly used and is compatable with polyester, vinylester, and epoxy... Fine for use in boats..

S glass is more expensive and is about 30% stronger than E glass.. It's more ridged and withstands high temps better.. You'd find it used in aircraft wings, high performance lightweight race boats and such.. It is also compatible with all resins..

Epoxy mat has no binders, it's stitched. Hope that helps!
Roger

Epoxy mat looks and feels like polyester mat. Side by side you can't tell the difference. I've used plenty of it and the only minor difference I can detect is epoxy mat feels a little stiffer than poly mat. Even though it is advertised as "stitched", you cannot see any stiches holding it together in any of the stuff I've purchased.

For an experiment, I tried poly mat with epoxy...thinking that wet out may take longer but it would work. I doesn't happen that way. The mat saturated to about 50% and then stopped taking resin.
