E150 Tilt Trim motor

I have a 1989 E150TXCEM. The tilt trim motor has stopped working, No noises or anything. I can see a voltage drop when the switch is pushed in either direction. It would work when lightly tapped on the motor with a hammer. And then work fine with the switch for the day. Now the light hammer tap does nothing. Is it fair to assume the electric motor is toast? Can this motor be serviced/replaced while the boat is in the water if it is above the waterline?

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: E150 Tilt Trim motor

Depending on which motor is used the brushes may be replaceable, as long as your taps on the motor did not fracture the ceramic magnets... Just make sure the armature is not damaged, brushes wearing deep gouges, or windings at end of where brushes ride not dark, indicitive of drawing too much current and seperating from the core group losing connectivity to the field. You can spin the brush area with a piece of sandpaper in your grip to clean up prior to assembly if no other damage was present.

I hope that was worded in a way to make sense to you, unaware of your technical knowledge...

I have had luck replacing brushes on a couple of friends units using car starter brushes sanded down to fit, we were out in the woods and had limited access to parts for a weekend project...

I'll have to pull the boat out of the water to get at this, but I will take a look at the motor condition. I don't mind even replacing the motor, My concern is that the saltwater rot got ocean water inside, and then even a new motor isn't going to help, I will need a whole new assembly.
