E200TXEO trim and tilt removal

My extremely rusty old trim and tilt motor finally gave up. I tried to remove the assy from the engine today. No luck. The manual release screw head is stripped. I was able to get the electric motor to turn (intermittently) enough to get the engine raised and then lowered onto the tilt support. after a lot of scraping and some struggle I was able to remove the snap rings from the upper and lower pins. My trouble starts here. The pins will not budge. The manual says to use a punc and hammer. I have used a punch and hammer from both sides and copious amounts of penetrating oil. there was a lot of corosion evident around the snap rings. I believe the next step is heat.
I'm concerned though because the hydraulics work fine and I don't want to melt a seal and end up with a total rebuild on the unit. I just want to replace the electric motor. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Work on the top pin. After you can get it out you need to retract the ram and then you can usually tilt the whole unit out enough to get to the motor mounting bolts/screws.

Thanks Walker. I'll try it tomorrow afternoon. Any advice on the heat? Heat the pin? Heat the alum casting?

You probably will want to apply the heat to the metal around the pin on the outside holes....where you dug out the "C" snap rings. The ram hole is probably lose since it needs to be lose around the pin. Be nice if you had a helper to lend a hand. One applying the heat and the other with a punch and hammer. I would also advise that a brass punch be used.....less likely to mushroom the head of the pin.

Would he be able to get to the back screw on the motor if he lifted the engine off the transom? That's what I was told to do on a J90 when I couldn't remove the pin. (I realize a 200 is a little bigger ;) )

Walker, OBJ, Thanks Much! I took your advice and it came apart relatively easily. Thanks again! I'll let you know how the rest of the operation goes.

OK, I got another question guys. I'm sure there's a perfectly logical answer but, why didn't they make that motor housing out of a more corosion resistant material. I mean there's stainless and plastic parts all over that engine......

I took the cover off that elec motor tonight on my work bench and it was all wet and rusty inside. It's a wonder it worked at all.

Shame on me for waiting so long to do anyhting about it. But isn't that the way it goes. We're so busy with the necessities in life that the fun stuff gets neglected.

Sorry, I'm rambling.

I did a 150 Ocean Pro recently and the trim motor housing was composite.

Walker, was the original composit or the replacement?

Re: E200TXEO trim and tilt removal

My old 115 was a saltwater use motor and the first trim motor lasted about 8 years before it rusted through Replacement lasted 4 more and I sold the boats with it still good. I really can't complain too much about that service life, but composite housings should be better.

Walker, OBJ, Success! I must say it went back together much easier than it came apart. Thank you for your help!
