I'm sure the Too Thirsty Five was always a crossflow engine and that there never has been a looper rated that horsepower. 225 yes, but not 235

thanks jimmbo. i keep hearing that two thirsty five statement but i acquired the rig just before hurr katrina and have not really had it out for much time so have put very little gas in it. the confusion to me is that if the 235's were so fuel inefficient why is the onboard fuel tank on the 25 cc boat only 70 gallons, it is the original tank too?

probably that was the largest tank they could fit. @ WOT that engine will burn between 20 and 23 gph

The 235 rating was taken from the flywheel. It's closer to 190 (actual) at the prop. In fact when OMC prop rated the same motor (yes, it's a crossflow) it came out as a 175. That still falls within the 10% rule from NMMA.

The large bore was only the 235 from like 81 on, including the 2.6 and the later 175 crossflows in the late 80's, as you mention. The 200's should all be small bore, but should have the high ports like the 235.

Actually 1980 was the year the 235 got the larger powerhead.
