E30ELCDM throttle/shift box adjustment

I've tried adjusting the two cables to the point where it idles ok and the slow speed lever will stay down, in forward gear. Now the throttle won't move forward. It has a different lower unit than the original so I think the shift rod needs adjustment. What is the easy way to coordinate the adjustments. Thanks.

Take the shift cable off the shift lever at the engine.
By shifting manually, be sure that the shift dent in the gear-box is the same as the shift dent of the lever. If not, the lower shift rod has to be adjusted.
When ok, set remote in neutral and lever on engine in neutral. Adjust cable trunnion so cable just snaps in on the lever pin.
Adjust trunnion on throttle cable so the vertical shaft just goes to the idle stop when slack is out of the cable. If too hard, idle lever on remote will not go all the way down.

Haffiman,

Is it in the idle stop position as shown in the picture? If so, I believe I understood everything you explained and has been adjusted that way. Yet there is still at least 1" to 1 1/2" more travel to get full power. The idle lever pops up a little bit around the idle postion but is flat at WOT. The shift lever has some slop in it, but is in the straight up position when pushed back by the cable so it shouldn't be a problem.

The idle was set correctly. I had looked inside the control box and nothing seemed damaged but the lever stops at the 2:00 position with the cables disconnected. This control is new to me others go to 3:00. The lever movement is somewhat stiff, even with the tension screw all the way back. What could be stopping it's movement?

Sticking cables! You may have to replace shift and throttle cable.
Remove the box.
Loosen the center screw from the back holding the handle 4 turns and give a hard knock with a hammer and punch to loosen the handle.
Remove the screw and handle.
Then split the box by removing the screws. Be somewhat 'careful' and put the box on a table or other horizontal surface. You may need a flat screwdriver to 'wiggle' it apart.
Disconnect both cables from the box (and engine), make a coil about 2ft dia and try pulling/pushing the cable ends by hand. It should easily move. If not - replace!!

I took it all apart but forgot to roll the cables into a coil. The throttle cable moves with no problem and looks fairly new, but the shift cable has a kink in it. It moves about half as good as the other. I find it hard to believe that is the problem but don't know for sure. The two smaller white plastic pieces are worn on the edges (picture). I greased everything up and put it back together. I guess I can take the shift cable back out since it is much easier than the other one.

The white plastic on pic 2 needs to be changed. Totally dismantle and clean out old grease, then re-grease and assemble.
The coiling of the cables when testing is rather important. The cable may feel ok to both pull and push when straight, but coiled is a different matter, at least to push. As throttle is your problem, that is the one to test first, difficult or not.

I took off the bad one and you were right, it was a lot more difficult to move and I could feel a catch in the last inch or so. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Are you really from Malaysia? That's a long way from here. Anyhow thanks for the help. Bob

Not from Malaysia but in Malaysia. Sailed here from Norway some years back. Waiting for the Somali pirates to go on holiday!!
