I am rebuilding my engine and the head gaskets say top cover on both sides. Which way do the two slots go? Opposite of the water inlet tube same side or opposite the water tube other side? If you look at the diagram it shows opposite the tube but same side. I don't want it to overheat. My manual is very vague, "Install head gasket and head".

Stop.----What manual do you have ??-----The tab on both sides is at the top and toward the outside of the block.----The arrows point to each other or to the exhaust passage way.-----Make 110% sure you get these gaskets on correctly.

That would be the starboard cylinder head #1 and #3 cylinder.----That is correct.----Make sure the water diverters / guides are in good shape.-----Those hose " thingys " in the water jackets.----Most of those gaskets would have a arrow on them.

Thank You, diverters are in good shape and installed. The first set of gaskets did have arrows on them. I had to replace two rods so I had to remove them. But it is a little confusing because they said top cover with an arrow to exhaust. I can see now they were talking about "top of engine" not top of head cover. It is easy to do things the second time around. Hard to believe that there are not more videos on You Tube. Although I watched a guy do a video on replacing the water pump and he put the gasket on the wrong side of the plate! So you cannot really go by that either I guess.

Thanks again, Dan

Correct----There is a " club fisted " presenter on you tube taking a V-4 engine apart.----Trying to take the tapered dowels out in the wrong direction , then using a bigger hammer.---Then saw another video where he was again puzzled by these simple dowels.----Worthless videos I say.

I saw that, generally I watch more than one video then still use my judgment on how to proceed.
