Eagle speed wheel

The angle of my transom and the angle at which the wheel mounts are way off. If I was to mount it straight on with the bottom of the wheel housing at the bottom edge of the transom then wheel housing is pointing down in the water way to much. I think I could fix the problem with some kind of wedge to put the wheel flat with the bottom of the hull OR just move the mounting of the wheel up on the transom so just the wheel sticks out of the bottom. But that would not be what the instructions say to do. I don't know what to do. HELP

TIA
LouLou

Re: Eagle speed wheel

I am not sure what you are saying here but the paddle wheel needs to be vertical. If you match the angle on a V hull then the paddle wheel will run against one side and likely not turn at low speeds. Also it will wear on that side. I had the same problem on my V hull and to get at the right height with out putting on an angle had to cut some off the mounting braket so would not be below the hull.

Get one of those 10 dollar plates for transom mounted transducers. Bolt it to the boat once. Then you can mess with locations of transducer without drilling additional holes in the boat.

Re: Eagle speed wheel

If I follow what you are saying you have a very steep transom angle. The wheel has been designed for a typical transom angle (about 12degree). I think it should work fine by moving the bracket up the transom until only the wheel is exposed below the hull surface. The thing to watch out for is, will the wheel still be in the water at planing speeds. You may be able to trim a little of the trailing edge of the bracket off as well. Boatist, my instructions showed to mount the bottom of the bracket inline/flush with the transom/hull edge. Didn't mention anything about keeping the wheel vertical. Mine works right done to about 3MPH.

I could not mount a plate anywhere on the transom. Not enough flat space.

The wheel will be vertical and inline with the boat but the bottom of the wheel housing will not be level with the bottom of the hull. The rear of the housing will be futher down in the water then the hull. I'll see if I can get a pic to show better.

LouLou

Not familiar with the eagle paddle wheel, but the units Airmar manufactures come with 2 wedges that are used to compensate for different transom angles, so I imagine it would work just dandy if you did the same thing.

If I had the wedges I think it would be fine. Mine FF didn't come with the wedges through. I'll look around and see if I can find some wedges OR I'll trim some material off the back of the bracket and mount it higher.

TIA
Lewis

I asked BPS about the wedges and they said they don't sell them. If anyone has some left over them I would like to purchase some.

Lewis

Re: Eagle speed wheel

The problem is not from the transom angle but from the dead rise angel. The wedges are not needed in my opinion. Mount the wheel vertical and move bracket down until half of the wheel is below the transom. Cut or file off the part of the bracket that is below the hull and your are all set.
