Last year on my last outing on the lake my lower unit would slip out of gear once I started to bring on the rpm's or when she was under load ( towing a tube etc ). So this winter I disassembled the lower unit and ground the clutch dogs even and inspected the forward and reverse gear. The forward and reverse gear are in excellent shape. I still could see the original tooling marks.

This year I got her put all back together and got her out on the lake. Same issue. Any ideas or what I could look for? Did I install it incorrectly? Your help is appreciated.

Turn the shift linkage one full turn counter clockwise. That work for me

Could this be a " spun prop"? Because I can back off the throttle just a hair and she reengages. But there is no audible "clunk " like when I first put her into gear. It's almost seamless as it disengages and reengages.

It turns out it was a spun prop.

Tell me about the problem you had...I have an early 80's Merc 70 and it feels like it falls out of gear [and goes into neutral] at full throttle or even getting there on the upper end. Not sure if that could be the lower unit going out, or if it is what you have.

How I knew or should say I was guessing it wasn't the gears was the transition from power underway to where it would go into " false neutral " was smooth. There was no clunk as when you first put it into gear when starting underway. Also after closer examination of the prop I could see where she was spinning. Hope this helps.
