My manual is really vague so I need some instructions. I need to replace the upper motor mounts on my 50hp. I removed the lower pan I beleive it is called but still cant see the motor mounts. I have been told that I can hang the powerhead without removing all the wiring etc.. So my question is where do I start after removing the cowling, lower pan etc.. to remove the powerhead and will I see the motor mounts then. I have a Seloc motor manual and its really kinda vague on what the next step is. Thanks for a great site.
1FASTLASER

Hi,

Start by removing the u-shaped cowl which fits below the powerhead (4 phillips head screws). Upon removal you will gain access to the 8 bolts (should be 8) that remove the powerhead from the adapter plate.

From there you should be able to separate the powerhead from the mid section (provided your driveshaft isn't rusted into the crank).

You should then be able to remove the adapter plate (i think it is simply a sandwich fit) and gain access to the two top mount bolts and rubbers.

Cheers,
Nicholas

hello
its to easy to just remove the power head. upper mount failure is and was common with those motors. but I did manage toget it down to a 2.5 hour operation. seems the rerelease of the classic in the early 90's had very weak mounts.
it usually require removal of the lower to reassemble everything. after power head and lower unit removal the mounts are accessable. you will need the two gaskeks for the head and adapter, a water pump kit is due :) a can of perfect seal two mounts and a spot of luck. but trust me., its not many wires and a whole lot easier to swing the motor out of the way. the factory merc manual does not even show the adapter so dont feel bad. but it does not negate the fact that it is. the adaptor holds the exhaust tube and water tube and shift shaft and has to be removed for mount replacement.
