It has been about 9 years since I have ran the 80hp Mercury Outboard that I have. I am wanting to get it back in shape. Any must do's? I have a call into a service center for next week, but if I can do it myself, then why not?

I would like to try to start it and see if she will start up, if not, then go from there. Is there suggestions as to what would absolutly need to be replaced?

assuming a carb'ed 2-stroke? pull the plugs and spray down cylinders with DeepCreep. Let them soak a while (overnight). I'd also spray down the carb throats while I was at it. Pull the LU and change the impeller/pump seals and drain and fill the LU while you are waiting. Probably worth hooking the hose up to the pee-hole and back-flush the cooling system out the water tube while the LU is off. Who knows what crawled in there. Turn (not pull) the thing by hand with the plugs out just to get a feel for any binding/seizing of the pistons in the cylinders. Watch the carbs/fuel pump while you prime it, make sure it isn't leaking.
