You have to disconnect the shift rod. Look under the carburetors for the connection. If you give the model number or exact year, someone may be able to tell you exactly how to disconnect it.

All V4 motors in the 1980's have a shift rod and they all have to be disconnected under the carbs to get the gearcase off. Now, what is the model number of your motor?

The shift rod on your 1981 motor is held by a slotted screw that is removed from the starboard side. Put the shift in reverse and look for the screw near the center of the pan and remove it. Some 1981 motors have the screw accessed from the port side, but your diagram shows it from the starboard.
