I just purchased this motor and the battery wasn't charging. I'm working my way through diagnostics, here is where I'm at:
The inside of the rectifier was half melted and running down the block, to the wiring output on the Power Pack! Now I'm pretty certain the rectifier is toast (half melted and not charging the battery), but my tach was still working... I've ordered a replacement that should be here Friday thanks to this forums help identifying the exact part needed, thanks guys.
I've also tested spark using the timing light, no spark on the middle. Cleaned grounds and swapped coils, still no spark on the middle. Now I'm worried since the guts of the rectifier melted onto the wiring output, but when I had it out a few weeks ago I could tell it was dropping a cylinder idling and planing off, once it was up and turning 4000-5500 I thought it was running pretty good. At least a lot better than the motor I just bought it to replace.
Do you think the rectifier was messing up the power pack or should I just order the pack now too? What digital voltmeter tests should I do? Just wait until Friday when the rectifier comes in and see if that fixes it? I want to go boating this weekend dammit!
