So i recently acquired an early 90s johnson 20hp two stroke outboard. I got it along with a good set of controls in a trade for very little, but its currently a wee bit of a basket case. Its missing the starter (its there, but its toast) and the bracket that holds it on, as well as some parts for the forward/reverse shifter i think...
Im wondering what years and models would have the same parts under the hood. I was told that 20, 25 and 30hp johnsons and evinrudes were nearly the same in that era, with basically the same powerhead. I placed an ad locally looking for a parts motor, and of course i was contacted about a 40hp parts motor. Would this likely give me the starter and shifter parts i need?
The other thing that interests me is possibly converting it to 25 or 30hp if i could find a complete donor with all the parts i need. Does anyone have any insight into doing this? Required parts? Is it even a reasonable thing to try to do? Im quite mechanically inclined with some smaller outboard experience.
Im not really planning on using it until next season, so im not in any big tear to get it done. The goal is to try to get a small boat and motor put together for a minimal amount of cash. Any help is greatly appreciated.
