Took on another project. my upholstery guy has a 6hp Johnson (early 90's) that he wants to get running and I want my interior done.... so I am working off some of the cost by working on his motor.

will be picking up his motor later this week and getting it running.

he says it has low compression. When I asked what it was, he didnt know. he said he got it from someone who said it had low compression.

motor looks clean, however I would like to have some info before I go jumping in

what should the compression numbers be?

anyone have an on-line manual that is readable. the one for 1990 up on boatinfo is a bad scan and really illegible and I still went thru nearly every page looking for compression information.

Anyone have a link to a better manual than what is on the boatinfo site? Need to change the pull chord on this motor now.

OK, for those johnyrude guru's

new rewind starter rope
new plugs
freshly rebuilt carb
60 psi of compression in each cylinder (which I believe is correct for this motor)
have nice blue spark on both plugs

this thing wont fire. got it to fart once

plugs got wet with fuel after 3 minutes of pulling

racerone F_R any words of wisdom

Scott - I have the OMC FSM covering the 6HP for 1998. (Sadly I cannot offer perspective on the 6HP....I have my own issues with rehab of a 1998 4HP.....the reason for my ownership of the small motor 1998 OMC FSM.)
If you determine the 1998 FSM for the 6HP would be helpful to you, I would be pleased to snap off images of the key sections of interest to you and convey them in some way. (Unless I would run afoul of forum guidelines in doing so.)
