Early fuel pump question........

Did any of the early fuel pumps (165 hp l6) not have the safety fuel port on them. I bought a couple used pumps to rebuild that just have the weep hole, other than that, they are identical to marine pumps, upside down with the filter etc. Would it be acceptable to tig weld the weep holes, then tap the case and put in the relief port?

Thanks, MK

Ayuh,.... I donno why you'd want to, they're readily available,...

A rebuilt pump is probably easier to find than the parts to do it,...

If ya Are gonna do it, why not just tap the weep hole,...

Re: Early fuel pump question........

The sight tube port is something that came later, so a lot of those older pumps will only have a weep hole.

A rebuilt pump is probably easier to find than the parts to do it,...

That's the issue I've found, rebuild kits are hard to find for "marine" inline (120, 140, 165) Carter pumps, if you can even find them. I think they don't want people rebuilding the fuel pumps, due to the safety risk of rebuilding a fuel pump, especially one without the sight tube port...

Thanks, the weep hole is directly under the downturn in the body, no room! Kits are 39$ ea the old pumps cost me $40 each, so with a little work, I'd have two pumps I built myself for around $80 ea, I have not seen them anywhere near that cheap online, lowest I saw was 125$ + shipping. MK

I just picked up a new one at O'Reilly Auto Pars for $97. AutoZone also has them for $97.

Look for part number M60032, replacement Carter fuel pump made by Airtex.
