So first off, I desperately need to find a new/better job!! Getting really tired of the crap my company puts me through, only to get that measley paycheck every 2 weeks... Tired of barely getting by... Second, and heres the 'midlife crisis part'... I have been finding myself dreaming if moving to myrtle beach... We visit there every other year, and ive always said I woukd never want to live there..however for what ever reason recently I have been thinking how great it would be!... WTH is wrong with me?!? Lol I've never wanted anything more than my country living, until these past couple months... Uggghh...

I was in Myrtle a few weeks ago for vacation. Pulled the camper down there and stayed a week. Had a good time. It is nice down there but quite a bit of traffic and a whole bunch of people. I've moved out of WV twice and always came back. LOL.

If it's any consolation, you're not alone. I think lots of folks (myself included), maybe even the whole world, are going through a similar thing these days. While the job scene may not necessarily get any better by moving, at least you'll be struggling in a much more pleasant environment. If you want the big fancy job with lots of money, you'll probably have to go to a big grody city and work 80+ hrs. a week. You'll have lots of money to be sure, but you'll never be able to spend it the way you want on what you want, and it will own you. However, if you want something closer to "happiness", well it's hard to be sad at the beach and if your gonna be broke it's a pretty good place to do that too. I can assure you, no one is moving down here to Florida for the jobs, but they just keep on coming. Not just Yankee retirees either. Lots of folks come down just to fall off the face of the earth. There are hundreds of little towns and thousands of small beaches to disappear to and it's pretty hard to starve when you have a boat and live on the ocean. It's awesome. Beware, the sea gets in your blood. Once you live near it you'll never want to leave Her again (seriously). It's like the Elves in the Lord of the Rings :) Now if you can get some kind of cool computer gig (iboats guru?)where you can tele-commute to work from your seaside bungalow you'll have it made! Good luck in your adventures!!!

Been there too. Great golf courses with great flesh eating bugs. Great beaches with great men-o-war. Great patio parties with with lizards trying to catch mosquitoes falling on your umbrella covered drink. Great weather with the great threat of hurricanes. Add infinitum, I say stick to your roots and cherish them.

Can you give it a temporary try? Have you researched what job outlook there is? I guess it would depend on if you had mouths to feed where you're at. I think of relocating as CA. is just so damn expensive - but I've got my son here and a good job which I usually enjoy(not that much lately - new mgmt. but it'll all work out). Geez the houses I could buy anywhere but here! :>)

With the advent of the internet, very few jobs require you to be in a big grody city to make lots of money. A large percentage of my friends and colleagues live at a location of their choice and telecommute to work. The only thing that dictates where I live is the proximity of a well connected airport. The only thing that dictates where I work is a signal on my Blackberry. The downside is that I got sunburned at work (pool) yesterday. :D:D

From things I have read on (ALL-DATA.COM) myrtle beach IS NOT A PLACE TO LOOK FOR WORK.. The part time summer jobs are filled and the regular jobs arent there. Please dont even think of coming to Charlotte to find work either,, We are FULL

How sad. :(. How fortunate JB is.:p

Never had a job I hated. Did live in a few places I didn't like, but always tried to make the most of what I had, even in cities.

I never knew anyone over the age of 20 who deserted a rural life for life in a high population density place. . .and they always came "home" to the country eventually.

Countryboy: There are millions who would take your job and your life in a heartbeat. You are most fortunate to have a job, a roof over your head and food in your belly. Making the most of what you are and have is the route to a successful life. Remember: Happiness is not a destination, it is a way of traveling.

Re: Early mid-life crisis???

I took off in 92 and traveled all over the USA for 8 years. I loved it, i worked as a commercial fisherman in Homer AK and a sous chef in Sedona AZ, i took odd jobs in Whittier CA and got by, was a maintenance guy in Chicago for a year at a slummy motel and a Long Shoreman in New Orleans LA.

I will never regret those 8 years of my life, i found the love of my life..twice :) was mugged 3 times (different states), Had to "borrow" a tire and a spark plug wire in the middle of the night in the middle of the desert in AZ to get to CA. Ran out of gas so many times. Met so many amazing people and was helped along the way by so many gracious people.

So if you dont have ties like, wife, family, kids etc.. pack up and move, if you can find work where you are now and you arent to picky i say go for it!

Run man, Run hard and run fast and have a blast!!!!!!

if you do have ties.. your stuck.. ):

Re: Early mid-life crisis???

I am over 50 and my job has become dreadful too. I live in SC and rarely get to Myrtle Beach. I used to go there most every year as a kid and a teen. MB was wild and crazy back then. I just loved it! I never got bitten by anything in the warm water. I was last there 7 years ago and things have really changed. Changed more toward attracting families. The Tacky pavilion is gone. Noise ordinances in place ie directed at motorcycles. 100s of golf courses. Lots of boating and fishing. A great place to start a tourist type business or go to work in retail. Maybe sale timeshare. I don't think there is much industry type jobs. I have dreamed of working and living there and in Charleston. Charleston may be your best bet for finding a job

Re: Early mid-life crisis???

Wow, lots of sound advice here, never really expected that sort of response but thanks to all.. Honestly, it would be selfish of me to uproot my family and make that big of a move (about 10 1/2hrs drive time) just to chase a 'pipe-dream'.. Also, I know that, like some of you have said, if I WERE to make that move, I would probably love it for the first couple of years, but would find myself missing the country, the mountains, etc. I'll be staying in the soil where we've sewn our family... even though I will still be keeping my eyes open for a different job..

yeah, it's a lot different when you have a family to consider. The good news is that the ocean isn't going anywhere. You can always visit. I think the most important thing is that you're willing to take a chance and shake things up a bit. You don't have to physically go anywhere to do that. There are plenty of miserable people in Beverly Hills and happy people in slums the world over. It's more about how you are, than where you are. Of course, boats are always a great distraction too!
