I have an 80-84 model 70hp evinrude. It was running fine the other day and then it just quit. After getting it home I started it up and it is only running on 2 cyl. the top cyl. is firing and it is getting gas, but not putting out power. What could this be? HELP

Re: EARLY MODEL (80-84) 70hp evinrude

There's a big difference between the 1980 and the 1984 model. What is the model number of the engine?

With the s/plugs removed, the spark must jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame on all cylinders.... a real SNAP!. Does ir?

What are the compression readings of the cylinders? Was the engine making any unusual noises before it stopped?

Welcome SLEEPY,

Check spark on all cyinders, do this with the plugs removed, what does it look like. Spark should be strong, blue and snappy on all, weak yellow spark or no spark indicates a problem but the problem can vary depending on the results of this test.

Post back the results :)

Hello ,
If the compression is good, then Id swap a coil for one of the other two and see if it moves the problem...if no change ,then a bad wire/ground or even the power pack may be out.CDI sells these and I have a parts motor with 3 coils and the ign pack.I also work for a dealer who has the OMC part books and a pile of inventory.....More info if you like/need or goodluck!
Tim

I checked the spark on the cylinder and even replaced the wire and ends to ensure the wire wasn't breaking down. The motor didn't making any noise. it just started skipping and quit. the model # is EJ70ELGIH.

Re: EARLY MODEL (80-84) 70hp evinrude

Sleepy.... You'll find that model number contains a "CI", not a "GI". That indicates that your engine is a 1981 70hp Evinrude. The "E" indicating that the engine is a Evinrude. Are you sure that there is a "J" following that "E"?

It's not a good idea to speak in generalities, but to be percise. With the spark plugs removed, did the spark jump a 7/16" gap on all cylinders with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP? And what are the compression readings on the individual cylinders?

I am going to run the compression test today on all three and yes the spark was very strong, blue and probably 1/2 inch or so. I think the ej stands for evinrude/johnson. same compnay right. I know that a johnson usually just starts with J.
Thanks for your help and I will post the readings this afternoon.

Re: EARLY MODEL (80-84) 70hp evinrude

The compression readings as follows: #1--40 psi
#2--- 120 psi #3 --- 120 psi. We pulled the head and found that the # 1 piston head was damaged and also #3 was damaged. The guy who looked at it said it was because someone had replaced the head gasket and did not check the head for distrotion. Therefore the head didn't seal good at the bottom of the first cylinder which cause blow by across the other two. he said it looked like one of the rings on #1 had broken causing the damage to the pistons. #1 cylinder wall is scared some but could be bored. What would be an app. cost for repairs? Wold it be worth it on this older motor?

Re: EARLY MODEL (80-84) 70hp evinrude

My $0.02 says fix it - it'll be WAAAY cheaper than a new motor.

I have a '75, and my friend has a '91, and they are similar (there are differences, but it's like a Chevy small-block from 1955 and one from 1985), and they just run and run, as long as you maintain them.

If you're at all mechanically inclined, it'll be even cheaper to DIY the rebuild. You can get PLENTY of help here on the board if you run into problems or have questions.

Besides - winter is coming...you'll need something to keep busy with...

Use the <Search> function above for "rebuild" and just read & learn.

Good Luck!
Matt M

What do you think would be the estimated cost if I did do it myself. I have do some automotive rebuilds but a stroke is a different animal.Should i bore all 3 cyl. the same and what do machine shops usually charge?
