East Coast Marine: Avoid at all costs!

I can't emphasize enough what a terrible place East Coast is to do business with.

Early Summer 2010, I took ownership of a brand new, but leftover Monterey boat. They were a dealership and the owner, Bryan, told me all about how wonderful their service department is, and how you need to buy your boat from a place with a real shop, rather than a 'fly by night' operation where you won't be able to get service.

Well, upon taking ownership of my boat, there was immediately a problem with how the boat ran. It sputtered on acceleration. Well, a call was placed to East Coast and I was assured that the engine was still breaking in and that I should wait a little while and see if it worked itself out. Well, it didn't, but I dealt with it that summer. Then, winter came and I was told that the boat would need to be run to be checked out, and since things were frozen the spring would be a better time to deal with the issues. Spring came and I placed a call and was told I could drop it off whenever was convenient for me. I did, and also wanted them to address a structural problem with the windshield.

Well, a week later I get a call telling me that they were no longer a Monterey dealership, and that Monterey wanted me to take the windshield issue to another current dealership. They also informed me that Volvo (the engine manuf. for my boat) denied the claim on the motor as it was probably a result of bad/old fuel. Well, I was upset, contacted Bryan and he responded in a rude fashion, and informed me that 'if they weren't going to get paid to do the work, they weren't going to do it for free, and that my issue was with the manufacturer'.

Not the response I would expect from the guy I thought I knew.

So, I picked up my boat (a 2 hour trip each way, and a tank of gas to drop it off and another to pick it up). I spoke to the Monterey dealership here in New Jersey and they contacted Monterey and are going to fix the windshield under warranty. However, they aren't a Volvo dealership, so I'd have to go elsewhere to deal with the engine issue.

I also put out a call to Volvo, as Bryan had put it, 'my issue was with them'. Volvo informed me that, because the boat was a leftover, it's probably a gummed up carb and that the dealer should have handled it for me. That dealership was East Coast. They didn't deal with it.

I put in a call to Monterey and heard back from them. The first time they even heard about my issues were from the dealership that is going to do the work. East Coast Marine lied to me and told me they contacted Monterey and were denied the warranty claim, when in fact they just blew me off. The guy from Monterey knew both Bryan and Zack (service manager) by name, and said they both had his cell phone number and they could have called them at any time.

So, as far as I can tell, East Coast sold me a boat to get it off their floor and then lied to me and refused to fix problems that were there from day one. And I'm out time and money from the whole ordeal.

I cannot express my disappointment with East Coast Marine enough.

I just wanted to throw this out here so any other potential 'suckers' (like myself) will know to avoid them.

Heard back from Volvo...they also never heard from the dealership. Volvo said they are going to take action...I hope their service contract gets revoked. Grrr!

one of your best recourses (and resources) is the manufacturers of the boat or motor; they know that their reputation is made or broken by dealers, fair or not. If they get concerned, they will spend a lot of money to recapture the customer. You hear a lot of stories about them "giving it away" when they legally don't have to, knowing that it is cheaper, and more effective, than an ad in a boating magazine. Keep Volvo and Monterey on your side and make the dealer the bad guy.

Gentlemen & Ladies...... sorry to hear about the bad time :( Please limit this to facts and not make this an overall bash fest so it will remain open. ;)

So far Monterey and Volvo have been great! I received callbacks from both of their corporate offices, and they seem to be going out of their way to make everything right. Just unfortunate that East Coast Marine felt the need to lie to me rather than to simply tell me they didn't have time, or didn't want to do the work, or whatever the case may be.

I'm glad things are being worked out by the manufacturers.

Some really good info has been shared here, regarding manufacturers efforts to make things right.

I can't believe they pulled the Break in Period excuse on a brand new motor. A brand new motor should run like a brand new motor. Proper break in is very important for the longevity of the motor and future performance but how many of us would drive a brand new car off of a lot and accept sputtering and backfires?

They blew you off the first time due to their lack of desire to work on it, period. But then in the spring, they obviously had more profitable work to do, and therefore they had you either at the bottom of their list or not even on it. I am not surprised in their tactic, but surprised they do actually have other work scheduled. Obviously they somehow stay in business. Are they one of the few in the area?

Well, my 'area' is a little sparse, as I live in Central Jersey and most of the boat places are out by the ocean, but within a few hours I have a bunch of choices. I just got a good deal on the boat from them and really thought they were a great group of people.

What surprises me is that they couldn't have been up front with me and blew me off before I drove 8 hours (back and forth twice), used 2 tanks of gas and had my boat for a week.

If nothing else, I think the dealer should have at least sent out a courtesy notice to the folks who bought Monterey boats from them, that effective on such and such date, they will no longer be a Monterey authorized dealer/repair shop. It could have saved you all this trouble and they could have made a small fortune on last minute warranty repairs. Because that didn't happen, it almost sounds like Monterey pulled the plug on them and not vice-versa.

I went through an issue withmy dealer, but they stepped up in an overwhelming fashion to make it right. I am confident that Monterey and/or Volvo will take care of you. Good luck and keep us posted.
