Hi all -

Ok - I stuck my foot in my mouth here and really need some help. I offered to help my father in law by changing his lower oil (81 or 82 Johnson 50Hp).

On the Merc I have -- it has a lower & upper drain plug. I re-fill from the uper (slowly).

Here I do not see any viable 'upper' drain plug. How do you change the lower oil?

Should have an upper and lower plug. Drain and fill from the bottom till it starts to come out of the top one. Post a photo of what you have for better info.

Hey George:

Flush and fill from the bottom plug so you void all the air from the drive. When there is an air bubble, there is no grease and no lube. Same for the lower unit on the outboard.

Ok - I just don't see it ???????

I understand the posts and the pic's and the "top secret" files. All as I expected to see.

Aprox 6 - 9 inches above the lower drain plug is a flat headed screw that does NOT resemble the drain plug (appears to be the oh s$#* screw that was posted that I sould not even look at; clearly not the same head type).

Many have said to re-fill from the lower drain plug -- gravity always works against me -- do you have a special fitting or something to stop the flow of oil out of the unit from "top fill" ?? I have always and quite slowly used the top plug and let it flow in slowly (30 min or so witht he help of a gravity fed funnel).

You can buy pumps that screw onto the oil top and pumps like a hand soap dispenser with a tube and metal thingy at the end of it that screws into the drain plug. people told me that they sell them at wal-mart but i didnt see any there so i went to local marine shop and bought one there (about $15)

you might wanna check out this vid of changing the gear oil.

Location of the upper drain plug???

I compared the diagram of the 1982 motor to a 2000 motor, and the location of the upper drain plug is almost identical!

You need to post a picture ... or at least give us the model # so we can narrow down the exact motor.

It has to have one.It may have been replaced with an allen head plug but you should still see it.

The cheap lube pump is the only way to go.Filling it from the top is asking for trouble,It must be filled from the bottom to push air out the top vent hole.

Here's a pic ....

http://tinypic.com/r/352md0y/5

(couldn't figure out that sizing thing)

As you can see - the lower drain plus is out and some oil is draining from there. There are other screws directly above the lower - but nothing in the same shape of the drain plug. starboard side of motor.

Could it be under the black screen / intake? I tried (gently) to take it off with no luck).

The Port side of motor:

I am using one of the tiny pumps and it still squirts out. I'm thinking just of jamming the heck out of it for the next step.

Any and all help appreciated.

The pic's don't show it real well -- no upper plug under the fins either.

Comparing your picture to the diagram for a 2000 50hp Johnson, looks to me like the upper plug is where the arrow is pointing:
