Well this isnt just a "ALL OF A SUDDEN" story its a prolonged problem that i keep putting off but its getting alot worse. My Silverline with a GM inline 6 250 has had a bad rod bearing and has been making a bad knocking sound since last fall when i pulled the boat out. I put my boat back in about 3 weeks ago and just been driving it with the attitude "if it blows up it blows up". But since i was driving it today it was making such a bad knocking noise and I really lost a hell of alot of power its kind of pointless to continue to drive it. I couldnt even hit 2500 rpm to get on a plane. I was pretty disapointed. So now my question is what is the easyiest way to replace that bad bearing. I belive its way at the back because thats where it sounds like its coming from. Im not to sure but i bet its way at the back with my luck. Ok so here comes my question. IM super lazy and dont really want to pull the whole motor n drive out of this ****ty boat so is there an easyier way? or can i just like make some REAL thick oil and jam it in and see if it takes up the bearing slop? LOL! Some one help me out I dont want to take this whole motor out again. Because last time i had it out I looked at the transom n laughd. I was bolting the outdrive into basicly a big pile of wet mush, and that was 2 years ago. I bet its twice as good now LOL! Anyways some one hit me up with some ideas so i can continue to drive this bucket untill the out drive falls off!

First find a big tree, then go buy some aircraft cable rated for about 20,000 pounds of tensile strength, then secure the out drive to the cable and the other end of the cable to the tree and hitch the boat up to a nice strong truck. now drive the truck around 30 feet or until the whole pile of metal attached to the cable is laying in your yard. You now have a nice start on replacing the transom and with any luck the whole motor should be very easy to work on. That is the easy fix.

A bad rod bearing hammering away on the crank since last year has undoubtedly FUBARED the crank, so it's not a "change a rod bearing" problem.

i don't know but i'd say it may have something on it. if the transom aint dust and the engine don't knock.........time to break out the hydrostream it seems to me.........

If ya just throw a bearing on, it will not last long......
90 WT oil ain't gonna fix it either.....
You are looking for a miracle that ain't gonna happen.....
Get the engine rebuilt, while it's rebuildable or get a new one.....
If you've had it for three years, & only spent $300, then you all ready have gotten your money's worth....
Why not take up trolling?....
It will last longer that way!.......;):D

You gotta be kidding. Dude either junk the thing or put a motor/rebuild yours in it and fix the transom. sounds like you got your 300$ out of it you already. Read the suggestions but you sit here and keep asking what should i do what should I do. You know what to do you just want to sit here and waste everyones time.

A paddle will not help, when your transom falls off, and water rushes in...

Have you actually checked oil pressure? If the bearing is that bad the oil pressure should be low to zero at idle. If it registers normal, you probably don't have a bad bearing but a terminal case of piston slap or a piston with a collapsed skirt or broken skirt. Some of those engines were prone to that. Either way, the engine has to come out to fix it.

I would well the drive if it is good, sell the block for rebuild, sell the trailer and give the hull away. Take that money and buy a boat that is in at least the same shape with a good running motor. You have got your moneys worth.

Re: Easyiest way to change a rod bearing Inline 6 250

Are you sure you have an engine problem? If your transom is as soft as you say, then your U-joints could be so far out of alignment and in such a bind that they could be knocking.
