EasyPoxy

Looking for an epoxy paint for the new center console and I came upon EasyPoxy by Petite. Any comments on this stuff? Is there better for less money? Locally this goes for around $90/gallon.

I used EasyPoxy on my old boat, and man it came out sweet. High gloss, and after 3 seasons of use still looked great. I put thin thin coats on when I did it.<br /><br />Now on the new boat I built I used Interlux brightsides primer/paint and it is crap. The paint is very soft, it marks up easily and doesnt look nearly as good as the EasyPoxy.<br /><br />I just bought some EasyPoxy for the new paint job and I hope I can get the same results as the first boat, this will be over bare epoxy not just Gelcoat so results may vary this time.<br /><br />Anyways I love the stuff, others will chime in I am sure.<br />-John

for a non-catylized paint, Easypoxy is very nice. i've used it in a few bildges and its held up well..<br /><br />on that note, i'm not sure i would use it on a topsides projects. i generally roll/tip or spray Awlgrip on most topside project. monday i'll be spraying a Chris Craft Dorie in Awlgrip.<br /><br />i definitely wouldn't do Brightsides, the only thing i use that for sometimes is a quickie bootstripe overcoat.<br /><br />you could probably do Awlgrip for a little over 100 or so. qrt of paint is about 60ish if i remember correctly, pint of Awlcat and a pint of brushing reducer...<br /><br />the Easypoxy might turn out great for a console, i just have never used it in that fashion. if you do use it, please let us know how you like it. i know its a pretty tough paint that covers well for bildges.

I've brushed (not rolled & tipped) Easypoxy on a dozen or so wood and fiberglass boats. My current "classic" ob has EasyPoxy decks (and Brightsides hull). EP lasts for years in tropical sun and chalks (VERY slowly) like oil based paints. It doesn't ding or scrape off easily. Its a good and easy to use one part paint without going high tech. It sticks well with minimun prep...over primer or straight on the gelcoat. Wipe it down and scratch the surface with 100 grit or less paper and it will give perfect adhesion.<br /><br />Even with spider gelcoat cracks the paint stays on and cracks with the gelcoat. The stuff gets shine from lack of pigment and also needs thinning to brush well to lay down. This means 2-3 coats minimum to give an opaque surface over dark repairs, etc. <br /><br />In my experience its MUCH easier to brush (thinned or not)EasyPoxy than Brightsides but Brightsides covers better and holds up well under sun about the same. Like already posted, Brightsides is softer and dings easier. Brightsides holds color really well under ultraviolet rays...better than EasyPoxy. Either of these give closer to original gelcoat gloss than high tech 2 part polys and are easier to prep too. <br /><br />That's my 02.

Thanks Gents.<br /><br />Spoke to my painter buddy last night and he agreed with all you guys wrote. The one thing he said was to be sure and use the Petite dewaxing product before priming. Then 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of EasyPoxy.<br /><br />Guess what I'm doing this weekend?<br /><br />Carpenters/cabinet makers told me to use MarineTek instead of 5200 to adhere the cleats to the inside of the console.<br /><br />Sure do wish I had someplace beside WorstMarine to buy stuff locally.<br /><br />Have a great weekend. No pix yet, still painting.<br /><br />So far, I am impressed with this EasyPoxy. Goes on well and brush marks are extremely faint. I am NOT a painter. In fact it is mt least favorite thing to do.<br /><br />So far, I used 527 marine bondo to fill all voids in MDO/MDF. Nice buzz. Then 2 coats of Petite Undercoater sanding with 200 in between. One coat of EP so far.<br /><br />Tonight I'll start assembling and then final coat of EP.

How long did it take the primer to dry? At what temp and humidity? Are you thinning primer and or paint? Are you brushing or roller/tipping? What type brush? What color?

Billp,<br /><br />I'm painting in my heated garage with the doors open. Radiant slab heat. Temp is 65 before I open the doors and drops down to about 55 by the time I am done. Humidity varies but I would guess above 50% outside lately.<br /><br />I am using a brush. I used $6 2" brushes for the primer from WalMart. I am proud to say I did sand between primer coats. I am using Wol(something) Marine brushes for the paint ($12 for 2"). Straight out of the can for both. Second coat of paint I might thin slightly to get a better finish. Several people have suggested adding Penetrol but I am not sure it's compatible with this paint. Anybody know?<br /><br />It's boring white paint. I thought about getting creative but chickened out.

Primer takes about an hour to stop being tacky. I am waiting 24 hours between coats. The paint I don't know yet as I have not been back in garage since first coat.<br /><br />BTW, this stuff STINKS! Despite my best efforts, the house has inherited the smell. I got a pretty good buzz before I turned on the fan.
