I just bought a 1987 stock power trim/tilt unit that came off a 90 HP merc off Ebay that appears to be in great condition.<br />I'm not sure if I have problems with the unit or not since it may be different than my Johnson tilt/trim.<br />I am testing this unit off the boat......<br />The single large piston will go up and down but the two chrome pistons (trim I guess) will not lower (they won't move when power is applied but I can get them to move by hand). On my Johnson tilt/trim unit the chrome pistons fully retract and almost dissapear.<br />There is also a fluid suction noise but I checked the fluid level and it appears to be full. I also cycled the unit maybe 10 times without a any change.<br />The battery leads and the motor get kinda hot but I don't know if thats normal or not.<br />How is this unit suppose to function off the boat without any motor weight applied to it?<br />Is the fluid just tranny fluid or is it something special?<br />I wanted to install it on a 85 HP Merc. I'm not sure the year of the motor, looks to be around a 1975.<br />The power trim unit is to big to fit in the mounting bracket of my Merc. Can I widen the mount on the outboard to accomodate the power trim/tilt unit or do I have to get a unit that is compatable for that year.<br />Thanks!!
