hello fellow boaters! long time no see/chat/msg lol

well i have a 2003 ebbtide 185 and hard shifting from the control , it makes a clicking/crunching noise at 10 oclock ( noise from box ) going into foward gear. Also very stiff. Ive taken it apart and the cables move easily by hand ? also took off the cable that goes from engine to the outdrive and its smooth as butter.. Maybe something broken or loose in the box ? or maybe need adjustment? i also noticed a tension screw at the box , ive tried very loose and very tight and still stiff. I also noticed if i give it gas and come.back to quick to neutral engine sometimes dies. Maybe thats a diff issue, throttle cable adjustement ?

Also does it make a diff what cable goes where in the box ?

Does the control move freely when cables disconnected? If not it likely needs cleaning and greasing.

Most controls of that type are universal. Since different motors need different controls, yeah it makes a difference where cables are connected. i.e. Mercury OBs push throttle closed. Johnson/evinrude push throttle open.

its weird , the control and box move nice when cables are unhooked. Also cables move freely to by hand when unhooked? except for the lower cable that has that black plastic spring assist thingy. That one i can only push it and and it springs back on my end, i think thats normal ?

Cables can be put in either position in the box.----At the motor end the shift cable moves first.-----So hook it up / adjust shift linkage first.-----Motor must be running or propeller must be turned when operating the control box.

so those 2 cables ends i can put in either location on the left side right? Also what do you mean motor must be running when operating the control box?

What motor / drive do you have ?----Many drives need the propeller turning or motor running for smooth shifting.---Less damage to gear box that way.

its an ebbtide 182 2003 with a 3.0 mercruiser engine and alpha one gen 2 drive . I put everything back together . Still little stiff with that black shift spring assist thingy . but when romoved it shifts ok. but months ago i dont remember hearing clunking/grinding from the outdrive as the gears engage. now i do ? a lot say thats normal that i gotga shift quickly. But before this issue it wouldnt grind or make any noise at all. maybe i need to do cable ajustment? it started after taking off that drive , maybe something didnt line up correctly? but if it didnt it wouldnt even change geara right?
