I have a 1974 envinrude 50 hp with an eclectic control box. I have been told that you need special grease for the lower unit. Is that true and what kind of grease if it is true.

It is true that electric shift lower units require a special lub which ensures proper shifting. It is not grease. Evinrude/Johnson dealers have the lub. If you check the label on most lower unit lub containers it will state specifically that it is NOT for use in electric shift lower units.

If I put the wrong lub in it would that cause ti not to shift at all ?
