ed skeg lower unit advice please!
Hello all,
I purchased a boat, motor, and trailer last week for a gift of a price. The motor is an early 60s 5.5/6hp I was told (the fella used it as a duck hunting boat and painted over the motor in drab green - I can't find an ID #). I'm wondering if the motor is worth salvaging. I heard it run, and it ran well enough, but it jumps out of forward and back into neutral quickly. Also, the lower unit was full of water when I removed the fill plug - not a good sign. Worse yet, the lower gear housing has a about 2" long that is all the way through as is evident from the fluid leaking through the .
I removed the lower gear housing, removed the gears and inspected for damage. I looked carefully, and couldn't see any damage of any kind on any of the teeth in the system, nor did I see metal shavings etc. in the fluid. With the LGH off and holding the clutch dog and gears in place by hand, the prop spins fine in the right directions F, N, R.
So, I guess my question are two -
#1. Did I just buy a parts motor? I understand the LUH could be welded by a shop for $30.00 or so, but I would to throw good money after bad if my "shifting problem" (jumps out of F) is a result of a damaged LU/gears. Given my decription, do you think that the LU itself is questionable now?
#2. What year/model is the engine? I didn't know how to post pictures of the motor, but I can email easily a few if you all would be so kind as to look them over for ID purposes. I also have a pic of the said .

My email address is christanke@chartermi.net

Even if I throw the motor away and sell the prop on ebay, I'm way ahead. I just seeing a crippled engine on the back of a boat!
Thanks for your consideration,
Chris
