Hey Guys, I need some advice from some skilled mechanics!
When i need info I just search thru this forum and bam there it is, but with my current project there is limited info and never any follow ups about the turnout from other people with the same issues.

I will try to be short and to the point.

1994 chris craft crowne 282 GM 454 7.4L with a king cobra. Spitfire ignition.
The boat only has 168 hours and my king cobra is like new and I have a spare drive so this project is very much worth the effort.

The simple part of the project is replacing the complete top end of the motor with a edelbrock performer kit (Cam, aluminum Heads, intake and carb) I should be going from about 330hp to around 400hp. Anyone that has done something similar please let me know the outcome. My boat is really underpowered and I need some Horsepower!

My problem is replacing the terrible Spitfire ignition. I belive there is 2 different systems, 1 has coil packs with wires going to each plug and a dummy distributor and the other has a coil sitting on top of a CPU with a distributor and the plug wires coming from the distributor cap. I would like to change all of the ignition parts and i think my only problem is wiring the shift interrupt switch. I was going to go with a complete MSD system, coil, distributor and a MSD box (marine) I have read a couple of different ways to wire the switch but no one ever posts there outcome.

If someone has done this please let me know a good route to go. One guy said that I should just wire the interrupt switch inline with the distributor power feed. that sounds great but wanted some opinions before i go that route.

Thanks to all for reading and i hope someone has some advice or can point me in the right direction.

To begin with; read up on a marine camshaft, and it's relationship to sucking water into your engine and toasting it.
the threads are here, use the "search" button.
Then search about how much hp the drive will take.
then, buy a factory manual, and decide not to drown people, when you sink your boat.
read up

That thing is going to run pretty good!

400hp is probably at the upper limit of a King...That's what the guy that rebuilt my 460 told my brother (when it was my brothers boat) It's good that you have a spare though....

You're using an Edelbrock Marine performer cam right?

The MSD system is absolutely the way to go! I'm not sure you can even buy all the old Spitfire stuff!

I would to love to do the same to my 454! (You do have closed cooling btw? If not you need to get it or you WILL have a real "Galvinator" there!!)

I think you really should check with MSD tech support. They designed their marine ignition to work with a lot of different engines and drives. They should have suggested ways to connect an interrupt system.

Consider yourself lucky that you have a (VP) Kone Klutch King Kobra. You wouldn't even want to attempt this with a dog-clutch model.... You could probably even put a Volvo Penta DP drive on it.

By the way.....I looked at a Crowne 282 (twin eng) for sale here on iBoats.....nice looking boat!!

Good luck

With the original thread being from November, the chances are good that the original poster will not be responding anytime soon. jomamma1 - you might want to start a new thread with your own question.

Oh yeah, welcome to the forum!

We'll probably hear from this guy again though......It's just about time to be trying out his "new" engine.....
