Trying to get opinions on which is best for reliability, cost of repairs, and cost of maintenance. Keep in mind that I'm a limited "do-it-yourselfer" (e.g. haven't tackled rebuilding carbs, adjusting linkages and timing scare me somewhat). Also the engine may sit for three to four months at a time without usage. I looked at the "smiley" chart on the iBoats outboard page, but don't understand the reasoning behind the "smilies".

PS: The engine would be 175hp to 225hp.

Re: EFI, DFI, or Carborated for 2-stroke?

Carbureted 2-strokes are the easiest for the do-it-yourselfer. Not a whole lot you can do yourself on a DFI. EFIs are somewhere inbetween.

Reliability is about the same as long as the motor is well maintained.

Carbureted 2-strokes are the least fuel efficient, EFIs aren't much better. DFIs are best, even a bit better than 4-strokes in most regards. Regardless of the induction, it still takes about the same amount of fuel to get the same WOT horsepower. Efficiencies vary more at lower RPMs.

Carbureted 2-strokes are banned on some waterways (not many, but it'll get worse rather than better).

There's some general information for you. Your specific needs might help in providing more appropriate information.

Smileys are for whatever you want to use them for:
Good Grief!
Ha Ha! :D
Sarcasm ;)
Cool!
What in the world???
Oh my!
Grrr!
etc.

Click on the smiley and it'll show where the next typed character would go.
