EFI vs Carb & 4.3 vs 5.0

I've been looking at a few different 19' ski/wakeboard boats recently, and am getting numerous different opinons from salesmans as to what motor is best for this size of boat. I want to be in the 220hp range. The 4.3 EFI puts out 225hp, and is the most technilogicaly advanced motor. The 5.0 carb puts out 220hp and is a simpler motor. I know that the V8 (5.0) will not work as hard as the V6 (4.3), but the V8 will consume slightly more fuel. Any thoughts?

Although the 4.3 will have no problem doing it, for pulling - bigger is better.

There's no replacement for displacement.

i personally like the 4.3 efi. over the carb 5.0, but the efi 5.0 would be best in that boat.

Don't let fuel consumption be a factor. The difference in fuel usage between those two engines on the same boat with the same load will not be noticeable. That is unless you spend a huge amount of time idling or in no wake zones, EFI will make a large difference here.

How much fuel would it save really?
If I could ski.tube and whatever in my 5.7 v8 and spend $40 or I could spend $35 in a 3.0 or a 4.3 what would I do?

yes they do because 90* is a natural for a v8.
90* is not natural for a v6, they have to split the throws to get even firing.
for a six it should be inline, 60* or opposed.
there is only one reason for any engine to be a v and that is compactness.
the 4.3 was born out of economics, just wack two cyl's off a small block, same with buick.
having said that would love to see a v twin i/o, just think a harley on water.
flat 6 i/o, a porsche on water.
flat 8 i/o, a 917 on water.
maybe a v12 i/o or a v16 pent roof combustion chambers.
quad turbo dmax with 120 psi boost.
twin turbo aluminum cummins pumping out 100 psi boost.
yikes, gatta go something warm running down my leg.
i gatta see a shrink.

Re: EFI vs Carb & 4.3 vs 5.0

When I bought my boat new 10 years ago, I faced the same question - Carb'd V8 or TBI V6? There were two comparable boats on the lot from the prior year at a steep discount.
I chose the TBI engine for several reasons:
- I can put the wife and kids in the boat and drop them in the lake knowing that it will start each and every time regardless of conditions - no throttle adjustments/choke instructions/warm up time, etc
- I'll never have a stuck choke/float
- I'll never have varnished/gummed/dried carb
- at the time, fuel efficiency wasn't as big a benefit as it is now
- It will always idle :)
After 9 seasons, I still am very happy wih my decision.
As stated earlier - an MPI V8 would be the way to go.

Thanks for all the advice, I decided to go with a 5.0L MPI in a 20' Maxum. I'll get the benefit of the V8 and the fuel injection too!
