Electric brake wiring question.

I am in the process of rewiring the trailer for my sailboat and adding electric brakes, I do not plan to launch from boat ramps, only by travel lift, so submersion is not an issue. Everything I have read says to run duplex wire to the electric brakes, then tie the return wire back directly to the vehicle ground return wire. My question is why not use the trailer frame as the return path since the ground wire is tied to it for grounding the lights anyway?

thanks

Re: Electric brake wiring question.

You can use the trailer frame as a ground return. It will work most of the time. I personally use both the frame with a short ground wire from the magnet to the frame and a long wire one guage heavier than the hot wire, ran all the way back to the electrical plug.

Two of the long time posters will add their opinions shortly taking opposite sides of the grounding debate. Pay your money, take your chioce and remember you can go the other way if time shows you that is what is best for you in your application.

The frame ground path depends on clean contact of several parts that flex in real life. I have found on my rigs that eventually one or more of those contacts develops corrosion at a most inopportune time and the local constabulary reminds me that the electricity is not flowing as it should.

Seperate ground wires has slowed down the contact with the boys in blue, but not entirely eliminated it. Why is it always while it is raining?:D

using a direct ground wire all the way eliminates a lot of problems in the future. i even do it on my lights.

Agreed, especially for something as critical as electric brake magnets.

Run wires direct to the brakes. As TD stated above, I also ran wires directly to the trailer lights and have not had any issues.
