I am rebuilding my 4.3 2bbl carb and the screw inside the choke that holds the choke plate rod was rusted and stripped.. So I am wondering if I even need the choke and choke plate at all since the wires running to it were cut. Pictures below point to what I am saying.

Are you rebuilding the carb because of hard cold starting? Maybe you need the choke.

No, it starts instantly with 1 pump of the throttle. Just wouldn't start this season, and by digging into the carb it's probably due to how dirty it is.

Ayuh,..... Rebuildin' a carb, usually means restorin' to new condition,.....

A workin' choke sure helps with cold starts, 'n warm ups,.....

But, Hey,...... It's Yer boat, do it anyway ya want,......

When cold might be some running issues but once warmed up as long choke is all the way open then no problem.

The marine mech who helped me put my rebuilt engine back in my boat didn't hook up the electrical for the choke. He said there's no need to use the choke unless I plan to run it in cold climates and that they usually cause more issues than they are worth. I was simply wondering if getting rid of the choke and plate would cause issues for the rest of the carb such as the open ports from where the rod of the plate was?

Any mechanic worth his salt would fix the choke. It's there for a reason. How many other corners did he cut fixing it up?

Like I said, the boat has started instantly without the choke for 2 years so with the 25 years of experience he had I think he knew what he was saying. But you're right, it's there for a reason. Even in the Northeast though I never needed it.

The screw inside the choke housing that is holding the choke shaft sheared off and I can't find a replacement shaft. So I am only concerned about not having the choke plate, linkage, etc.
