electric choke solenoid

I have a '68 merc 1000. when I triied to fire it up the electric choke solenoid did not close the chokes.

Is there an easy way to check if the part is bad?

At what time and configuration (of th key and choke button)is the unit supposed to have power?

It should have power when the key is on and pushed in.

You should here a click when you push in the choke.. Check on make sure the plunger the connects to the choke linkage on the carbs is not broken.

you can also take a jumper wire from the pos post on the starter, and jump to the post on the solenoid, if it activates, back track the wiring from there. on my 71 1350, i had to run a separate wire and switch for my choke, opening those old control boxes can be a nightmare, insulation is usually cracked and falling off. why the run i don't know.

Also, you might manually operate the linkage to see that if you did have 12v to the coil and it energized, it would be able to suck the solenoid up and close the choke butterflies.

sometimes they just need a little wd 40 on the plunger.

Thanks for all the input. The chokes move freely as well as the plunger in the housing. I'll try the jumper. I'll have to bring my volt meter home from work to do the other tests.
