Electric fuel primer pump on outboard??

My primer bulb is hard to reach on my boat due to an installed cowling above it. Has anyone ever tried to install an electric primer pump that could be turned on for around 10 seconds that would keep me from contorting to get to the primer pump?? Also, on a recent outing when the temp was around freezing, the bulb was so hard that it was almost impossible to squeeze.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!!

Rick

use a coast guard approved pump and wire it with a momentary swich, quite a bit of big boats have them.

I've glance around a bit for something like this, but have not seen anything that jumps out. Any suggestions on where to find and approximate cost? Also, what size?

Thanks

the one I have is from a late model pleasure craft and costed about 125 but its coastie rated.
its a bit of an overkill to use solely as a primer pump but whatever pump you buy MUST be coastie rated for marine use.

Thanks,

Where would you find this?? Also, I guess it needs to be low pressure. I sure don't want to take a chance and ruin the carbs.

Thanks

Re: Electric fuel primer pump on outboard??

My 1988 23'er (twin engine)came with them (OMC brand I think). They worked OK for a while and then one crapped out. The repalcement cost was substantial (I don't remember the number but think it was over $200). I replaced both of them for the traditional squeeze type. Besides the cost I was concerned about reliability - and one of mine did crap out. My other objection was you could not tell when the carb float bowl was full. With the manual you squeeze till it is hard.

Do one of the aftermarket places sell one of these? I've checked West Marine and a couple of other places, but have not seen one of these.

Thanks

Do you have the option of just relocating the primer bulb where it isn't obstructed by the cowling? If so ,that's what I would do.Unless of course you just want an electric pump type.

No easy option. I thought that the electric would make it simpler. Thanks

web page

This might work for you.Just make sure as mentioned above that you install momentary type switch. Also insure that this will be coast guard approved for your vessel.

Re: Electric fuel primer pump on outboard??

I'm all for the techy solution, but how hard could it be to simply rig up a mechanical pull to a home made bulb squeezer? You could even set it up so you have a little mechanical advantage for cold winter days.

I have to admit it's not nearly as sexy as the electric setup, but you do get a number of advantages. Feedback, reliability, failsafe (you can always just go squeeze the bulb), independance of other systems, and cost spring to mind.

Just a thought...

EDIT: There's also a world of difference between the cheap aftermarket primer fuel bulbs and some of the high end ones. The BRP ones are really nice.

Just remember that whatever you use it must be free flowing when the pump is off. If it isn't it will become a fuel restriction. The ones the guys have mentioned have this consideration. Some electric pumps dont.

All, thanks for the info. I was hoping that these would not be a fuel restriction. I had considered paralleling a line around the fuel pump with a 1 way valve in it in case the pump would not allow the gas to flow.

Thanks again!!

Re: Electric fuel primer pump on outboard??

I would think that installing a good OEM Mercury/OMC fuel bulb would be the simplest fix. I have a Wal-Mart special on a small tank and it is really hard to use during cold weather. I also have a Mercury OEM bulb on my outboad and it stays soft, reguardless of the temperature.
Just my 2 cents, really not worth that much though,:-;
