I have a 1986 110 hp vro rude with a 5 year old non oil injected diaphragm fuel pump that needs to be replaced because it is leaking fuel into cylinder #4 causing that spark plug to foul. It used to cost $150. Now it's almost $400 to replace it! Ain't paying that. Since I mix my on fuel why can't I put a regular electric fuel pump on and plug up the vacuum hose on the engine block that drives the pump? Will this work?

will it work?
possibly.
will it be USCG approved and legal? nope.
will be a fire hazard.
find the pieces for the standard pumps that were used on the 88 spl motor.

why will it be a fire hazard? Cars have electric fuel pumps. Old cars and new ones.

On a car if the engine shuts down or looses oil pressure the fuel pump will shut off. Unless you can find a way to control the pump to prevent an explosion, fire or pumping fuel over board if a hose breaks, I would not install an electric pump.
Install a pulse type pump.

If I hook the pump to the ignition and the engine shuts down the pump should also shut down. Won't the needle in the float bowls of the carbs stop the fuel if there is a problem?

why ask a question and then asrgue the answer. The electric fuel pump issue has been drug out on the forums for a long time. They have no place being in a marine situation. There is a reason they didnt come from the factory with them on there. Rebuild the pump you have.

My pump cannot be rebuilt. The housing is bad. Why spend $400 when I can fix my problem for $50?

Check with your local USCG or DNR, they will tell you why.
Have you checked into converting it to a pulse type pump, shouldn't cost anywhere near $400.00.

If you look in BRP Evinrude parts.com under yr 1996 for a 88 Special that has the old pulse type fuel pump. It sells for $97.00. You may have to do a little plumbing but it's a lot safer. But then again do what you want, 'cause I won't be riding in the boat.

Re: electric fuel pump for 110hp rude

I considered the electric Mr. Gasket and other pumps to replace my VRO pump. In the end I did exactly what the forum is telling you to do. I didn't go with the electric because I couldn't find one that had decent reliability and the right pressures at less than the $71 I paid for the Sierra pump. I may have to do some replumbing but I will get it to work. I made a small manifold with a nipple on the back to plug into the hose and mount the pump on if my motor does not have the boss to mount the 88spl pump.

I looked at an 80 something 110 at my friend's boat repair place and it had both the VRO brackets and the boss on the side of the motor to mount the 88/112SPL pump.

I will mount mine on Thursday and report back on how I made out.

If your key is on the pump will always be trying to move fuel even if the motor is not running. A pump that will not do that would be more expensive than the new VRO pump. The cheap Mr. gasket pumps had 3 to 1 bad reviews on the Amazon sight. One guy had 3 mounted in his hot rod in the hopes that just one will work You can't do it reliably, or safely for less money.

My VRO housing is just fine and I will sell it to you to rebuild if you want. I'll take $71 for it. ;)

I'm also kind of curious of your original diagnosis too. How does the cracked housing leak fuel into just one cylinder and cause the plug to foul?

It leaks into the hose that connects the engine to the fuel pump. That hose uses the engine to make the diaphragm move. Only air is to be in that hose. If the pump has a torn diaphragm or crack in the housing internally it allows fuel to flood that engine cylinder causing that spark plug to foul.

I just don't want to spend too much for the original pump. If there is a safe pulse type pump that will work and it's cheap, I will use that.

The 88 and 112 spl were non VRO motors, that is the pump I ordered to replace mine. It will be here tomorrow and I'll for sure have it mounted and take a test ride Saturday, I'll put up my results here. I'm going down to the boat now to see if I have the flush mount boss on the side of my motor. If it isn't there I already made a flat plate type manifold with a nipple on the back to mount the new pump to and attach the hose to.

Re: electric fuel pump for 110hp rude

My 90 has the boss to mount the regular fuel pump and the threaded holes in the block. There is a plug in the center of the boss closing off the opening into the crankcase. I'll pull that plug out and the 88 spl pump should just go on right there with the 2 screws holding it in place. The nipple for the VRO pump hose looks to be screwed into a 1/8 NPT hole so I will unscrew that and put a plug in it. I'll post how this works out with a picture sometime over the coming weekend.

Does anyone know the size of the screws that mount the pump to the CC?

I think the screw size might be 10/24 stainless steel. Also don't forget the gasket under the fuel pump if you bolt it to the block which I'm sure you already know. Let us know what happens.

Thanks, 10-24 is the right size, the pump came today and I will get it mounted Saturday AM. I'm working my Saturday OT all on Friday so I get a 13 hour day tomorrow, no boat service until Saturday morn. :D

Re: electric fuel pump for 110hp rude

Life got in the way and I didn't get to try this out until tonight. The motor runs like a charm with the 88 SPL pump mounted to the boss on the side of the block. The VRO pump is removed and will be sold on ebay as a rebuildable good housing. The $71 pump is available here for about $45.

The pump is a PN 433387 but I used the Sierra pump PN 18-7352.
