I have a 4.3 Gm 262 carbed engine. Any idea of electric fuel pump I can use other than mercruiser fuel pump. I'm not sure of the psi or volume to use and the installation. Could someone direct me in this matter? Thanks, Monico

Re: Electric fuel pump Question

Why don't you want to use a Mercrusier fuel pump? If it is to save a few bucks, don't. Either way you need a marine fuel pump. It's an errant spark thing. If you develope a fuel leak in a boat, the vapor pools in the bilge. an automotive fuel pump isn't designed to the spark free standards that a marine pump is. Don't risk your saftey to save a few bucks.

Re: Electric fuel pump Question

I plan on using a marine fuel pump. I was needing info on psi and volume specs so I could get the right after market electric fuel pump. Mercruiser electric fuel pump is way to expensive. Any info on what the PSI and Volume might be or what should buy would be of great value to me right now. Thanks, Monico (I have a 4.3 Gm 262 carbed engine)

Re: Electric fuel pump Question

Merc spec for pump pressure is 3-7psi (pretty generic for all carbed engines).

Thank you for the answer. I will now try to complete my task of purchasing all the components and finish the replacement. Thanks again, Monico

Re: Electric fuel pump Question

Shop around, I paid (IIRC) $116 for my rpl pump. Exact fit, just needed two o-rings that were not included, they were an additional $.37 each.

Re: Electric fuel pump Question

Did you hook it up so it only runs when the oil pressure is up or did you just hook it up to your ignition switch?

yes...I am one of those guys who worry :)

No, it is hooked up to ignition switch. I do not see why ot needs to be hooked up to the oil pressure switch.

Re: Electric fuel pump Question

If for some reason the ignition is left on and there is a fuel leak of some type...fuel in your bilge. If the float chamber in your carb has the slightest of a leak, fuel will fill up your entire crankcase.

Also probably illegal.

USCG regs require that an electric pump only opperate whle the engine is running.

There are two exceptions:

1. A momentary switch may be used to prime the fuel system(although it shouldn't be needed).
2. Pump may also opperate while the engine is "cranking".

The keyswitch on the dash will not provide that kind of control. Passing the power through a pressure switch will.
