electric fuel pump vs. mechanical

is it a good idea? right now i have a mechanical pump . however i was wondering ... can i change it out for electric .. my application 3.0 omc 1986
what are some of the pros and cons ....

That mechanical pump has lasted 20 years,......

Why switch now,...........

Nothing wrong with a mechanical fuel pump & there will be no benefit in switching.....;)

Also if you use electric you have to wire it so it will shut down if the motor does for some reason (like a fuel line break). One benefit of electric is fuel is pumped up to the carb as soon as you turn the key on. Unlike the most of us that have to crank the motor for 10 to 12 seconds before fuel reaches the carb.

One benefit of electric is fuel is pumped up to the carb as soon as you turn the key on.

Not exactly, the pump on EFI engines runs for 2 seconds to pressurize the system, but carbed pumps do not run until the engine is being cranked over. Just like a mechanical pump.

of coarse you could wire the pump to a toggle sw. with a constant power supply that way you could turn the pump on before cranking the engine ..
no real benefit ... im still keeping mine mechanical ..

no real benefit ... im still keeping mine mechanical ..
But unless he was to hit the switch as soon as there was any sign of trouble (ie; fuel line break) it could fill the bilge in a few seconds with gas. Like you, I will stay with my mechanical.

like bond-o said it has worked for 20 years why modify it now ...
i have worked for toyota and lexus for 15 years , i dont reccomend anything other than factory ... same goes for the boating world im quickly finding out ..
thanks again to don s and bond-o .. i can tell you folks have some serious boating knowledge ... in which i do not have ... but i am reading and learning ..
