Electric or mechanical shift?

How can I tell if an outdrive is electric or mechanical shift? The outdrive is an OMC 400, model #983486. Thanks, Ryan

400's were never electric. 1978-81 are hydromechanical. 1982-1985 are mechanical.
If your lower unit has a rectangular zinc anode next to the six idle relief holes, it's mechanical. No zinc= hydromechanical.
