Another problem. I need to replace my electric shift controller on my '62 Evinrude 40 h.p. model 35933. My old controller has (3) buttons, neutral, forward & reverse, and three wires Red (power) green (F) & blue (R). I found a few replacement buttons on Craigs list, but they have (5) wire hook ups. Three are labeld the same as mine, then there are two more labeled 1 & 2 on them, but yet they still have only three buttons on them. Can I use the (5) wire controller and just hook up the three wires that are labeled RED, F & R or will it not work on a three wire set up by just not hooking up the remaining two leads to something and maybe even just snip them off of the controller?

Re: electric shift controller

If memory serves correctly, the other two terminals had white wires going to them for the neutral start feature. You should be able to use the switch, I am sure others will chime in with advice.

Yes, use the switch. Just hook up the red, green and blue. Forget the others.

Re: electric shift controller

Hopefully it is a "real" selectric switch, not a hydroelectric switch. They are electrically different. The switch that you want for the 40hp selectric is 279091. The blue and green are never electrically connected to each other on the selectric, where they are connected in reverse in the hydroelectric switch.

OK. I just got this one solved. I found a (3) wire switch on Craigslist in the state of Oregon. I'm in Mich. I talked to the seller on the phone and I have purchashed the switch and throttle controller. I will have it in a few days, so I am all set on this one. I rebuilt the entire gear box (electric shift) and installed a new impeller and housing, and now the pump is not pumping water through the motor. Back to the drawing board!!!

I really appreciate the feed back and replies to all of my questions guys, as I am a novice at this motor stuff and I am trying to get my boat back in the water ASAP. Thanks!!

Well, the cooling water system is all set now. The problem I had was that the water tubes were pushed into the housing grommets facing the wrong direction and all the way down to the bottom of the housing, and not the cut angle is facing the impeller and pushed in as to not restrict the water flow, the way it should have been done in the first place. Like I said, I am a novice at this stuff, but I am learning even at an old age! LOL
