Electric shift years

I looked on the web but couldn't fine what years Johnson outboards had the electric shift. Anyone know the years they had electric shift?

Depends on what horsepower, but generally 1962-70 then they went to Hydro-Electric in the late '60's - early '70s. Like I said, it depends.

My son was going to look at a 1974 115 Johnson for $400.00, he blew up his 1994 150 Johnson FastStreak and wanted to put the 115 on till he rebuilds his.

A 1974 115HP is a hydro-electric shift. You'd need to really inspect the motor well, and make sure that you get the controls with it and that they work.

Thanks, I told him to stay away from them electric shift motors, but I wasn't sure if 1974 was electric, he just wants something that will get him a few trips, he fishes bass tournaments. He's going to use my boat this coming weekend, he has a two day tournament on the Sassafras River in MD.

1968 was the last year of electric shift, 1972 was the last year of the hydro-electric shifts. 1973-1976 were hydro-mechanical shift. the 1974 is a hydro-mechanical shift. which is a good system. 1977 most models went to mechanical shift.

Well, that is almost accurate. Actually, the 40hp had electric shift thru 1970. That's why I put in the disclaimer about it depends on year/model.

Wow good to know, I have a 1975 85HP Johnson, so the 1974 115hp is the same shift as mine and he should be OK putting the 115 on his 1993 Nitro Bass boat.

I have a 74, its says power shift on it. runs great, shifts great. no complaints here...

The gearcase parts list (and inattention) threw me on that one. It has an oil pump and solenoid cover gasket listed, but no solenoids. The hydro-electric and hydro-mechanical use the same gasket....tricky

Thanks guys, he picked up the motor today, ran good and had 100 to 102 comp. in all cyl. got it for $360.00
