Pro Bass has always serviced my boat but this is the first year out of warranty and here I go. The point being "I am getting to know my boat". After fixing the starter problem and moving on to other general maintanance issues boat was running great. this morning it did not click at slave solenoid. I applied power to slave solenoid big r/y and boat turns over. I apply 12v to little y/r solenoid clicks but thats all. When I hear the screamy siron that goes off all works. Last year I would be driving the boat and it would die I would tap around the key area until the warning siren started and then all was well. (I replaced the ignition). I think I energized the little r/y after the nuetral safety switch also. Does anyone know what I am dealing with.

Re: New starter problem

I would by-pass NSS, just to diagnose the problem,,,

Re: New starter problem

yea I did. I dont know what is happening. I had it all working good last night. the alternator was off. the only thing I did today was install the new alternator plug it in and lower the trim. I put jumpers from the batt directly to the neg and pos at lower part of slave solenoid and it did not energize the output of the solenoid. I certainly would say it was the solenoid then, but I am getting half volt readings everywhere. If I hook meter up to the two small wires at solenoid and turn the key, I get a half volt. When I check the wire that goes directly from the top of the starter to the alternator I get a half volt. My ignition switch has big red, the y/r and two purple wires. Does anyone know what energizes the warning siren. If it comes on everything works

ignition problem

ignition problem

5.7 2005 mercruiser
Starter works from slave not from key. something must be shorting but I did not do nothing and it worked last night.
If I check voltage anywhere it is 12.5 until I turn the key on and then it is .6. I totally disconnected the slave solenoid and one wire at a time and it does the same thing. I thought maybe something was feeding back or shorting through it; just trying all I can think of.

Re: New starter problem

Ayuh,... Take the Big Cannon Plug apart,+ Clean the terminals....
It's the big rubber plug where the motor interfaces with the hull... Usually has a hoseclamp on it...

Re: ignition problem

Check the main engine harness plug. Pull it off and check for corrosion.

Did you try the troubleshooting suggested in the "adults only" sticky at the top of the page?

No, I pulled them off altogether while I fiqure this out. It was working without the alternator yesterday. I have been working on this since 8am other than about 1.5 hours where I was studying the diagrams youall mentioned. It will probable be some stupid little thing, but it is kicking my............

Re: New starter problem

I am going to do this. I am becoming one with my boat now. I might be a little daft/dumb, but I aint smart enough to know it yet. I was in a serious plane crash 3 years ago, but I still fly, but it did some stuff to me. I am thankful to be able to enjoy life as I can. The plane literally dove down to the ground and caught fire. Front page in Daily news Crestview Fl.
Well does this make the problem clear to someone. With key on or off I can jump from batt to slave solenoid and turn starter over; whereas If I check voltage from other large terminal on slave using the ground at the smaller/ground terminal of the slave I get 12.5 volts, so I jump the top of the slave (12.5v ) to the other side (going right to starter) and nothing. Dang I know I gotta be have a brain...... While waiting on answers I am going to study the continuity circuit.

Re: electric short?

OK, I did just what you said. I put positive on primary with ground at slave and again using direct from the battery I get 12.5 volts both ways with the key off. I get 6.5 with the key on.
