Hi, I have a 1998 Johnson 20" shaft with pull start. Is there a way to convert it to electric start? If so, does anyone know the part numbers and a place a might find them? Also, I'm not interested in an onboard charger, so I don't need that if it's not necessary.

Thanks,
Chris

(btw, I posted this earlier today, but somehow got crossthreaded with another post.)

Chris,

Your best (possibly only) source for the kit is going to be a Johnson/Evinrude dealer.

Just give them a call with your model and serial numbers and they will shoot you a kit price.

if onboard charging isnt nessacary, than its pretty simple setup. starter, selenoid, 6 gauge cables for poss and neg, and a neat lil red push button switch...im not sure if you intend to keep it as a tiller or remote, if you need a remote kill switch , youll have to wire in an estension into the kill switch you currently have... its all pretty easy and cheap stuff, with the exception of the starter being the only expensive item... look on ebay
you need starter number #5376( arco) to replace stock omc#'s 386591, 392133,585061

outboardstarter.com has your unit for 143$

mike

Re: Electric Start Conversion?

technically yes, but you dont want the continuous duty like the ones used for tilt and trim motors, just pick up the cheapest one for outboard starter applications, i believe are about 18 dollars at westmarine.com

DONT use the automitive style selenoids.. only marine
use one of these... west marine's solenoids
