Electric start on outboards

When was electric start introduced to outboard motors? thanks

I remember back in the 50's probably around '55 I'm pretty sure OMC offered it on their 30 hp Big Twin. I know in '57 they offered it with their 35 and as I recall they had it for the Sport Twin 18 hp. Having had an 18 of the day, I thought ES was overkill. Course if you have a boat with the helm up front mounted on the front deck, it made sense not to have to crawl over the seats every time you wanted to start your engine.

When they started marketing outboards that were too big to pull start for the average guy. Like Mark, I think that was in the mid '50s.

Now that you mention it, I do recall a blue, bald headed engine picture in a sales brochure with an optional electric start offering. There is a site: www. oldomc.de.com (or /de.com) that has a lot of really neat sales brochures from the era. A guy in Germany owns and maintains the site. Really a super collection.
