Hey guys,

So I am not sure if I should post this in the electric problem area, but I decided since this is an Engine / outdrive related issue, I would start here.

So this is officially my second or third boat.

its a 19 foot, Edson Challenger circa 1987-1990 (I think)

I bought it as a project and put an engine in it. and Today it roared to life :)

and then died just as fast.

Knowing this to be a fuel issue, I looked for the throttle release button so I could keep the outdrive in neutal, but rev up the throttle.

And this is where the fun begins!!!

On a passing note, I removed the throttle cable and started the engine and rev'ed it up a bit and it runs like a charm.

On every engine I have ever seen, there is usually a button you push that allows the drive to stay in neutral and the throttle to be increased.

Except on this boat, which seems to have one, but I cant figure out how it works.

- On the left side of the throttle, there is a Tilt UP and a down. (see pictures)
- On the right side of the throttle, there is a Fwd, Neutral, Rev.
Near as I can tell, these are electric switches similar to the tilt.

now I will mention that currently the trim pump is not powered, I have the outdrive off, and I didn't want the pistons moving around. but while I am writing this up, I wondered if it needs to be powered for the

so, Does anyone have something like this and can explain to me if there is a trick to getting the throttle to release so I can start the engine?

since this is a new boat to me, and the company defunct, I was wondering if its powered? powered by the tilt motor? powered by something else?

I would appreciate some help in this please and thanks.

What happens when you push the square button in the side of the bottom of the lever, shown in pic 221103? If that button pushes in , then move the lever and I bet it will be in throttle-only mode.

The throttle-only mode is more than likely mechanically triggered and not electrically. You did not say specifically what engine and drive you have, but your project pics look like all components were black so I am thinking it is a Mercruiser setup. They are not defunct so you should be able to work thru any problems you may have with the controller.

Grab throttle lever at the base (where it pivots) and pull out when lever is in neutral.

My Volvo Penta controller works like muc wrote, lever pulls out from the housing for throttle-only.

Ok so to answer the questions thus far. It's a mercruiser 4.3 v6. 175 hp The square button on the base is not a button, just a piece of plastic. As for pulling it out, duchy I never thought of. That, the the first thing I will try in the am It's not obvious from the pictures, but the fwd, neutral, rev decal on the right side of the throttle are right above another switch. Thanks for the tips,I knew that you guys would be helpful Will post more tomorrow when I have tried it.

Yep, that looks like it solved it, I haven't actually tried started it tonight, but the throttle handle slides out about a quarter inch and moves forward, and the throttle wire moved Yay, thanks peeps Menglor

My old boat had almost exactly the same controls. One tip I learned is to use your fingers to pry at the base against the plate so you are not yanking on the interior parts.

Yeah, Thumpar, I put my right palm between the lever and the side then twist my hand to the right, much less stress on the handle that way.

Almost wish it was electric, but then it's one more thing to break

I have that one too, Grab the square base of the throttle stick and pull straight out, then turn the throttle toward forward til it stays out. Next time you return it to straight up it should pop back in to normal mode where it also operates the shift cable.
I say that because pulling inward on the stick from the top where you'd operate the throttle seems like it would be tough on the mechanism.

Wow, I thought I was in the minority with this type of throttle-only mode engagement.
