New to boating member question.

While replacing a rotted wall panel in my newly acquired 1968 Old Town Atlantis, I found two items that look like they should be connected some where. One item is a heavy Gage wire that comes from a though plate mounted under the hull and looks similar to a grounding rod assembly. This wire was cut and left behind the wall. What is this and where should I connect this to? What does it not do now that it was meant to do back in 1968?
The second question is the presents of an older transducer mounted under the head. The same situation exists in that the two wires were cut at the wall and go no where. There was only an old VHF radio in this craft when I bought her and I plan to add GPS and VHF DCS to her this winter. Can I reuse these? Any comments will help.

Re: Electrical componets identification

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,...

I have a 1973 vintage Old Town Atlantis,...

The Big Wire you describe sounds like something that's been added since it left Old Town...
What it Was, can only be figured out by following it to see where it goes, or Went....
And,...
Most transducers are dedicated to the units they came with,...
While it might be possible to reuse it,.. I find it Doubtful....

Are you going to try to get 1 more lap out of the old OMC Stringer drive,..??

Mine's gutted,+ awaiting it's new SBC, 383,+ a Bravo drive,....
Hopefully,.. It'll be completed this coming winter...

"One more Lap"? Re-powered in 2005 with a 1985 OEM rebuild. less than 200 hours on her now. I'm hoping for MANY years of excitement from her.

The large gage wire is mounted to a through hull brass plate (smoother against the hull than a transponder, about 1/4 inch rise from the hull) Looks like some kind of ground for electronics or even a lightening rod set up. As soon as I learn to upload I will post pictures. I bought a used SI-tex on e-bay. Charter/Plotter/ Sonar. This will be my winter project to replace the (80's) older mix matched electronics now installed. New I- com DSC would not run with the older Eagle GPS/Fish finder nor a 130 Garmin.

I'm glad to hear about another Old Town in existence. I cannot find information on the History of these boats other than the three I have found on-line for sale. Questions to Old Town Canoe have gone unanswered. I only have the information from prevous owners have supplied in the purchase package. I have the history of where and when these V-Hulls were built, but not much more than what the previous owners have left in the purchase packages.

First attempt at adding pic's to posts.
Any help in identifying these items and proper use of them would be of great help.
