Hi Guys,

I need some help with my 88 Merc 80hp s/n OB371405 its a 3 cyl with the thunderbolt V system with 3 seperate coils.

Ok, I have no spark at all (engine cranks no problem) and have checked the following:

1. Kill switch circuit & mercury tilt switch - all ok.

2. Trigger system checks - book says I should get 11-14 Ohms on each of the 3 trigger wires (white, brown, purple) and the trigger white/black - I get 1.24K Ohms?

3. Stator: Book says I should get 3.6K - 4.2K Ohms between Red & Blue - I get open circuit. Book says 90-140 Ohms between Blue & powerhead ground - I get Open circuit. Book doesnt mention reading between red & powerhead ground - I get 107 Ohms.

Any ideas anyone - Is my stator dead and would that cause my no spark problem???

I would appreciate some help as I want to use it this weekend!!!

Thanks,

Crashed

Re: Electrical Help Needed

stator will cause a no start problem and has been known to do so, these can go out with no warning. also the switch box has a bad habit of going without warning also - which just happens to be my problem. mine went without warning 8 miles out in the gulf of mexico! sounds like from your ck's though it is the stator, good luck

Re: Electrical Help Needed

According to your readings you have a bad stator and trigger. I would disconnect all wires and check them again. Its unusual for both to go at once.

Open in stator would mean dead - happened to me although I was at the dock not out to sea! get a CDI/Rapair replacement from: http://www.seilermarine.com/rapair/mercury.htm
They work better than factory and are less $$$.
You will need a flywheel puller tool or have the 'wheel pulled at a dealer. Use red Loc-tite on the stator bolts.

crashed; as you say,the stator checks open coils, this is definitely one cause for no spark.at the same time have the switch box checked out before re-start,might have been the cause for the stator going bad. good luck

Thanks for your help!

I will have find a source for a new stator, and a flywheel puller (anyone know any good UK suppliers?)

Does anyone know how to check the switch box, or is that for someone with the diagnostic equipment?

Thanks

Re: Electrical Help Needed

In the field switch box faults are normally diagnosed by substitution. If you are in the position to take your switch box to a recognised dealer he should have the equipment to verify if is working or otherwise. Best of luck Keith B..
