We have a 1999 FourWinns 190 Horizon, 4.3GL PWTR VP engine. We had several repairs done to the engine in the past year. The engine was removed, rebuilt, and re-installed due to a head gasket failure. We are mostly past the mechanical issues, but an electrical issue has recently presented itself. Occasionally when I go to start the engine the entire electrical system will ?trip? and go dead. All power is lost ? ignition, pump, trim, lights, etc. After this happens I have to disconnect the battery for a minute in order to ?reset? the system then all electrical power comes back and I am able to start the engine.

I replaced the starter last week and cleaned (and used dielectric grease) on the starter and battery connections, but the ?trip? still happens.

Any ideas what could be causing this issue?

Sounds like you have an intermittent short somewhere

Wkb2460, Thanks for the feedback. Are there any ?usual suspects? for intermittent shorts? Relay, fuse, connection, etc?
I?m not the best at diagnosing electrical connections, any guidance is appreciated.

Did you have an overheat at some point? If so, look for any wires that run by the exhaust and look for melted wires.
