Hi, I have a 3.0 mercruiser. ALL in all its a great motor but i got towed in today:mad: So the starter or the selinoid is juts clicking, i figure its a bad conncetion or ground, but i go out to the boat 3 hours later and the coil ( i think, its a canister type deal that my fifth distributor cable goes to) is like burning hot to the touch and boiling oil out of it, so i disconected my teriminal at the battery and disconnceted the wires on the coil (i labled them) and will go out and see if it cooled down any, but the motor it self was totally cold to the touch, so does any one know what might be going on? any info much appreciated.

Year of your 3.0L???????

Sounds like your starter may be still engaged and probably dead if it wouldn't crank again.
If you actually have a points distributor, the starter being engaged would keep the solenoid hot which puts full battery voltage to the coil. Even with the key off.
Disconnect the battery cable or shut off the main battery switch till you find out.

the 3.0 is a 1989. i took out the starter and the gear is not engaged, but i guess that probably dont mean a whole lot, if oil boiled out of the coil should i assume the coil is junk? thanks alot for the info.
