I have a 1998 50hp evinrude model # E50T6LECC serial # G04533930. I ran aground and the engine stopped I discovered a blown fuse. I replaced the fuse several times but each time I tried to raise the engine by power tilt it would blow the fuse. After getting towed in and got the boat out of water I inspected for bare and shorted wiring also checked up & down tilt relays didn't find anything. I put in a new fuse and tried to raise the motor using the switch on the motor, nothing happened, atleast it didn't blow the fuse. I then reversed the wires at the tilt switch and was able to raise the motor. I replaced the wire's as they should be and tried the tilt down and it worked? I ran the motor up and down several times on different days every thing seemed to be normal. I put the boat back in water went out several times without incident then a couple days ago it blew another fuse. Thinking the problem was in power tilt, I disconected the hot wire at the tilt switch on the motor and it started OK. After gettig back dock side I reconected all wires and couldn't believe the thing works normal? I'm baffled any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

caption,

The only thing that will pop a fuse is a short circuit or too much amp draw.

1. I would trace your wires all the way back to the trim switch. That can also be shorted.

2. Does your engine lift relatively easy when you release the manual tilt screw? Your tilt tube may be binding.

Re: electrical problem 1998 50hp evinrude

Thanks for the come back. I had almost came to the conclusion that I would have to go thru the long tedious job of tracing wires. The fuses blow when I,m powered down to idle or neutral never had one to blow when I'm powered up. Then attempts to tilt will blow the fuse. Not tried the release to tilt motor, the screw is frozen but it seems to raise and lower without laboring. Thanks.

caption,

It sounds as if your problem occurs depending upon throttle position.

That leads to the switch/handle or the wire going to the throttle/switch handle.

You may have somthing there, sounds like a good place to start. Thanks

Still scratching my head. Checked wireing didn't find anything. It seems to blow the fuse when I'm in foward gear and run aground. Although I try not to run aground,I'ts almost impossible not to in the back bays where I go. Is there a safety built in or would this cause excess amp draw?
